If you were part of the group who got addicted to chatting and instant messaging back when it first came out, then you no doubt still have a place in your heart for the ease (and lack of expense) that goes along with talking to people through a medium where you can use your voice, your keyboard, and even your web cam… but where you do not have to, if you still want to get your point across. There is just nothing to compare to the simplicity and efficiency of the instant message — which is probably how it got its name in the first place. The IM is just unrivaled, when it comes to getting things done.
Of course, not all instant messaging programs are created equal. Most are usually just hang outs for spam bots and advertisers who were hired out of third world countries, paid to interactively shill a website. While these people and programs are the way things are on AOL and Yahoo Messenger (as opposed to the relative ghost town that is Google Talk), Skype, as well as the people who make use of it, does not suffer from this sort of issue. Skype might even be considered the last pure and uncorrupted of all of the different instant messaging programs.
While you might have never used Skype in the past, the fact that it is entirely free (unless you start calling people on their prepaid blackberry and land lines using reach prepaid card) might sway the decision in its favor a little bit. After all, what do you have to lose, when you can talk to people all over the world for free? Not only that, but since you have to look up people directly, you never get spam bots IMing you wanting you to look at their web cams. The simple fact is, with Skype, you can get a lot of valuable business taken care of. That is a beautiful thing.
