5 Steps to Writing a Successful Blog

Blogs are like navels: everyone’s got one. But if this is something you enjoy doing, you think you can do it well, and you want to be successful at it, you need to follow five steps.

Be Original

Coming up with an original idea or a unique perspective can be the most difficult thing to do, but it’s also what will bring people to your blog. If you can find a way to make your blog stand out you’ve won half the battle.

Don’t Plagiarize

Creating new content is hard, but stealing it is morally wrong and illegal. Any single thought has probably been expressed many times and in many similar ways, but that doesn’t make it okay to cut and paste it into your blog. Your spin or your opinion of that idea is unique, and you should focus on that. If you absolutely must mention someone else’s thoughts, paraphrase and then site your source.

Be Consistent

Once you’ve found a gimmick or a style that you like, don’t change it. If you’re doing a photo blog don’t start adding essays, or the other way around. It’s important for your audience to know what to expect, because that’s how you’ll build up a loyal fan base.

Be Reliable

You want to pick a schedule that works for you, and stick to it. If your readers expect new content on Mondays and Thursdays but your blog is updated erratically, you’ll begin to lose your audience. Reading a favorite blog is something people look forward to, and they work it into their weekly schedules. If you need time away, ask a guest to fill in for you.

Maximize the use of your wireless internet and most importantly, have fun! If you’re not enjoying your blog no one’s going to, either. If you’re having fun your audience is going to pick that up in your posts, and that will help keep them coming back.
